The 24th

(Directed by Kevin Willmott)

Awards: Outstanding Independent Motion Pictures Nominee, NAACP Image Awards

The 24th is a historical drama that tells the story of the all African-American 24th United States Regiment. Corporal William Boston (Trai Byers) dreams of fighting not only for his country but for equal rights. Stationed in the segregated South and forced to live under Jim Crow laws, the 24th struggles with local racists, including the all-white Houston police force. Written and directed by the Academy Award-winner (and former guest lecturer at Bates) Kevin Willmott, this film recovers a history that many have forgotten or never learned. The 24th comments on racism and colorism and advances discussions about the representation of Black bodies. (Written by Owen McShane ‘22)
