Céline Sciamma is one of the most respected and interesting filmmakers working today.  The director of acclaimed features like Girlhood and Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Sciamma has devoted her career to interrogating classical cinema’s male gaze.  Her characters push the boundaries of traditional gender norms and her movies become a form of protest and activism as a result.  Sciamma’s latest, Petite Maman, tells the story of Nelly, a young girl whose grandmother has just passed away.  As she cleans out the house where her mother was raised, Nelly meets a girl who is her same age.  The Bates Film Festival is proud to screen this film in advance of its theatrical release on April 22, 2022.
