On The Record tells the story of Drew Dixon, a former music producer, who was sexually assaulted and abused by Russel Simmons. Throughout the film, Dixon is forced to relive her past trauma as she considers going public with her experiences.  Worried that speaking out will damage Hip Hop and Black culture but wanting justice to prevail, Dixon is forced to make a choice that is uniquely difficult because of her positionality as a Black woman. This film and the brave women who are its subjects make space for women of color in the #MeToo Movement. By highlighting the voices of Black women specifically (who are too often ignored and silenced), the film inspires conversations about #MeToo and serves as both a plea and a strategy for making social movements more inclusive.
