The History of Sound, directed by Oliver Hermanus, explores themes of love, queer identity, loss, and the power of music. Set around the time of World War I, the film tells the story of Lionel and David who bond over their shared love of folk music and eventually fall in love. After being separated because of the war, the two reunite and travel around Maine collecting folk songs. The film spans decades and demonstrates the role of music in preserving memory, connection, and identity. Fitting into the BFF’s mission, The History of Sound uses art and music as a lens to explore culture, history, and the passage of time. (Written by Siena Bird, ’26)
