Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul and starring Tilda Swinton, Memoria follows a Scottish woman living in Medellin, Colombia who begins hearing loud sonic booms. Told in a non-linear format, the film is both intriguing and engaging and keeps viewers on their toes. Weersaethakul’s ability to stress the main character’s awakening as a spiritual being while also revealing her connection to past memories and events makes his latest film another important artwork that explores and advances the possibilities of cinema as a medium. The Bates Film Festival is proud to present Memoria as an exclusive special engagement – one of the first stops on the film’s roadshow theatrical release. (Written by Jonah Sacks ’22)
