Sean Mewshaw grew up as the son of a novelist in Rome, Italy, and Charlottesville, Virginia. He was an English Literature & Theater major at Princeton University, and trained in acting at the New York Shakespeare Festival. Over a decade working in Los Angeles feature film production, Sean was lucky to learn his filmmaking craft from some of his cinematic heroes. On Remember the Titans Sean produced and shot 16mm footage for DP Philippe Rousselot which became a documentary-style montage at the heart of the movie. On Gangs of New York (shot in Rome), Sean worked as one of Martin Scorsese’s Assistant directors. He was cinematographer Michael Ballhaus’s apprentice on Something’s Gotta Give, where he met Frances McDormand and shared with her James Salter’s short story “Last Night.” Sean directed McDormand and Jamey Sheridan in the short film version, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Sean made short films at the Upright Citizens Brigade for comedians like Tony Hale and Tommy Dewey, while directing commercials, music videos, and branded shorts. In the theater, he assistant-directed the Mark Taper Forum premiere of “iWitness,” for which he edited large scale video sequences that won the LA Drama Critics award for Projection Design. He returned to his wife Desi Van Til’s native Maine to direct her screenplay Tumbledown, starring Jason Sudeikis, Rebecca Hall, Griffin Dunne and Blythe Danner, which won best Feature and best Director awards at the Savannah Film Festival, and went on to international theatrical and streaming release. Now living in Portland, Sean has staged a number of critically-acclaimed site-specific theater productions such as “Constellations,” “True West,” “Glengarry Glen Ross,” “A Case for the Existence of God,” and Desi Van Til’s “Childish.” Desi and Sean’s next feature film Reversing Falls is slated to shoot on the coast of Downeast Maine in late 2026.
